The old lady in Metro

– Rajesh K. Jha

The wrinkled face glowed,
against the intermittent play
of shadow and bright light,
as the train slid like a python on the wing,
inside the metro tunnel.
Her spectacles looked cheap,
but the frame was carved with tiny floral designs,
it perched carefully on the bridge of her nose,
eyebrows curved in deep attention,
gaze fixed on her fingernails.
The light pink polish looked almost colourless,
like the morning sky on a hot day,
she blew gently into the fresh polish,
to dry before the destination comes,
who knows when?

In your creased skin,
and glowing eyes
bounded by the crows’ feet on the sides,
life shone like a stardust,
mysterious and alluring.
